What Is Audio Merging?

Audio merging (also called audio joining or concatenation) is the process of combining two or more separate audio files into a single continuous audio file. The files are played one after another in sequence, resulting in one output file. This is distinct from audio mixing, where multiple tracks play simultaneously on top of each other.

Common Uses for Audio Merging

  • Podcast assembly — Combine separately recorded intro, main content, and outro segments into one final podcast episode.
  • Audiobook creation — Join individual chapter recordings into a single long audio file.
  • Music production — Stitch together multiple takes or sections recorded separately.
  • Lecture compilation — Combine multiple short lecture recordings into a complete course module.
  • Sound design — Chain multiple sound effects together to create a longer audio sequence for video or games.

How the Merger Works

Upload all the files you want to combine in the correct order. Our tool concatenates them sequentially using FFmpeg. For best results, all files should have the same sample rate, channel count, and format. If they differ, the tool automatically normalises them before merging to ensure seamless playback without sudden quality changes or level jumps.

Adding Silence Between Clips

You can optionally specify a gap (in seconds) to insert between each merged segment. This is useful for podcast chapters, audiobooks where you want a natural pause between sections, or presentations where brief silence marks a transition.

Output Format

The merged output defaults to MP3 format at your chosen bitrate for maximum compatibility. If all input files are WAV, the output can optionally be WAV for a lossless result. Metadata from the first file is used for the output file by default.

Tips for Best Results

Record all segments at the same sample rate (44.1 kHz or 48 kHz) and same number of channels (mono or stereo). Normalise each file before merging to ensure consistent loudness levels throughout the combined file. Use our Normalize Audio tool before merging if your recordings have different volume levels.

How it works

  1. Click Upload and select two or more audio files to merge.
  2. Drag to reorder the files into the sequence you want.
  3. Optionally set a gap duration (in seconds) between clips.
  4. Click Merge Audio to combine the files.
  5. Download the merged audio file.

FAQ

How many audio files can I merge at once?
You can merge up to 10 files at once. For larger projects, merge in batches and then combine the results.
Do the files need to be the same format?
No. The tool accepts mixed formats. Files are normalised to a common format before merging automatically.
Can I set the order of the merged files?
Yes. Drag and drop the files into the order you want before clicking Merge.
Can I add silence between merged clips?
Yes. Set the gap duration in seconds between clips for natural pauses.
What format is the output file?
The default output is MP3 for maximum compatibility. WAV output is available if all inputs are WAV.
Will the volume be consistent across merged files?
If your files have different volumes, normalise them individually using our Normalize Audio tool before merging.
Is there a file size limit?
Each individual file must be within the server upload limit. The combined duration can be very long.
Is the tool free?
Yes, completely free with no registration required.
Is this the same as audio mixing?
No. Merging plays files sequentially one after another. Mixing plays multiple tracks simultaneously on top of each other.
