Convert MP3 to WAV Online Free
Convert compressed MP3 files to uncompressed WAV format for professional audio editing and compatibility.
Why Convert MP3 to WAV?
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is an uncompressed audio format developed by Microsoft and IBM. Unlike MP3, which uses lossy compression to reduce file size, WAV stores audio data in its raw PCM form with no compression and no quality trade-offs. This makes WAV the preferred format for professional audio editing, recording studios, and applications that demand the highest fidelity.
Common reasons to convert MP3 to WAV include:
- Professional editing — DAWs like Audacity, Ableton Live, and Logic Pro work best with uncompressed WAV files to avoid generational quality loss during editing.
- Software compatibility — Some older software, hardware samplers, and embedded systems only accept WAV files.
- Game development — Unity, Unreal Engine, and many game audio tools prefer WAV for sound assets.
- CD authoring — CD burning software typically requires uncompressed PCM WAV files at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit.
- Broadcast and film — Many broadcast delivery specifications require uncompressed audio.
What Happens During MP3 to WAV Conversion
The MP3 is decoded back to PCM audio data and wrapped in a WAV container. No additional quality is lost beyond what was already removed during original MP3 encoding. The resulting WAV will be much larger in file size. A 4-minute MP3 at 128 kbps might be 4 MB; the same audio as WAV at CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo) will be approximately 40 MB.
Sample Rate and Bit Depth
Our converter outputs WAV files at the original sample rate of the MP3 (typically 44,100 Hz or 48,000 Hz) and at 16-bit depth, which is the standard for CD-quality audio. If your downstream application requires 24-bit or a different sample rate, you can further process the WAV file in your DAW.
File Size Consideration
WAV files are significantly larger than MP3. A 3-minute stereo WAV at 44.1 kHz / 16-bit is about 30 MB, compared to roughly 3 MB for the same MP3 at 128 kbps. Ensure you have adequate storage before converting large collections.
When to Use WAV vs MP3
Use WAV when you need to edit, process, or re-export audio. Use MP3 for distribution, sharing, and everyday playback where storage space is a concern. A good workflow is to archive originals in FLAC, edit in WAV, and distribute as MP3 or AAC.
How it works
- Click "Upload MP3" and select your .mp3 file.
- Optionally choose the WAV sample rate (44.1 kHz recommended for most uses).
- Click "Convert to WAV" to start the conversion.
- Download your WAV file when processing is complete.
