Boost or Reduce Audio Volume Online Free
Increase or decrease the volume of any audio file by a specific number of decibels without distortion.
Adjusting Audio Volume Online
Sometimes a recording comes out too quiet — the microphone was too far away, the source audio was recorded at a low level, or the file just needs to be louder for comfortable listening. Other times a file is too loud and needs to be reduced to match other audio. The Volume Booster tool lets you increase or decrease the volume of any audio file by a precise number of decibels (dB).
Understanding Decibels
Decibels are the unit used to measure audio volume changes. The key things to know are: +6 dB roughly doubles the perceived loudness; -6 dB halves it. A change of +3 dB is just noticeable to most listeners. Changes of 1 dB or less are barely perceptible. Common adjustments are +3 dB to +10 dB for boosting quiet recordings, and -3 dB to -10 dB for reducing loud ones.
Avoiding Clipping and Distortion
When you boost the volume of an audio file, the audio waveform peaks get taller. If any peak exceeds the maximum digital level (0 dBFS), it clips and causes harsh distortion. Before boosting, check the current peak level of your audio using our Audio Info tool. If the peaks are already at -1 dBFS or higher, use the Normalize Audio tool first to bring peaks down before boosting, or use normalisation instead of a manual boost.
When to Use Volume Booster vs Normalize
Use the Volume Booster when you know exactly how many dB you need to add or remove, or when you need a consistent relative change across multiple files. Use the Normalize Audio tool when you want the audio to automatically reach a target loudness level (EBU R128 for broadcasting, or -0.1 dBFS for peak normalisation).
Common Use Cases
- Making a quiet podcast recording louder before publishing.
- Reducing the volume of a loud sound effect to match other elements in a video.
- Increasing the volume of background music without distortion.
- Batch adjusting multiple recordings to a consistent level before merging.
How it works
- Upload your audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, or M4A).
- Enter the volume change in decibels: positive to boost (e.g. +6), negative to reduce (e.g. -3).
- Click Boost Volume to apply the change.
- Download your adjusted audio file.
