What Is a Waveform?

An audio waveform is a visual representation of an audio signal over time. The horizontal axis represents time and the vertical axis represents amplitude (loudness). A waveform gives you an at-a-glance visual picture of the audio — you can instantly see loud sections (tall peaks), quiet sections (flat areas), silences, and the overall dynamic structure of the recording.

Why Generate a Waveform Image?

  • Podcast thumbnails — Waveform images are a visually appealing way to represent a podcast episode on website pages, social media posts, or podcast directory listings.
  • Social media content — Audiogram-style posts featuring a waveform image with an audio clip are popular on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn for sharing audio content visually.
  • Course materials — Include waveform images in course slides or documentation to illustrate audio concepts or show students what different audio characteristics look like.
  • Music release artwork — Some artists use waveform images of their tracks as unique visual artwork for single releases.
  • Technical documentation — Waveform images are useful in technical reports, audio engineering documentation, and quality control workflows.

What the Waveform Shows

Our waveform generator uses FFmpeg with the showwavespic filter to create an accurate waveform visualisation. The output image shows amplitude over time in a clean, high-contrast style. Loud sections appear as tall peaks, quiet sections as short lines, and silence as a flat horizontal centre line.

Customisation Options

You can customise the waveform colour (foreground and background), image dimensions (width and height in pixels), and drawing mode. The split channels option displays left and right stereo channels separately for stereo files. The standard mode averages both channels into a single waveform.

Output Format

The waveform is exported as a high-resolution PNG image file. PNG was chosen for its lossless compression and support for transparency, making it ideal for layering over other design elements. Download the image and use it in any graphic design software, presentation tool, or social media platform.

How it works

  1. Upload your audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, or M4A).
  2. Choose the image dimensions (width x height in pixels).
  3. Select waveform colour and background colour.
  4. Click Generate Waveform to create the image.
  5. Download your waveform PNG image.

FAQ

What image format is the waveform exported in?
The waveform is exported as a PNG image file with lossless compression.
Can I customise the waveform colours?
Yes. You can set the waveform colour and background colour. A white waveform on a black background or coloured waveform on a white background are popular choices.
What resolution can I generate?
Common resolutions are 1920x200 for wide podcast headers, 1080x1080 for square social media posts, and 800x100 for compact website players.
Can I show left and right channels separately?
Yes. Enable the split channels option to display stereo channels separately in the waveform image.
Is there a file size limit for upload?
Standard file size limits apply. The waveform is generated from the audio data so any supported audio file works.
What FFmpeg filter is used?
We use the showwavespic filter from FFmpeg to generate the waveform image.
Is the tool free?
Yes, completely free with no account needed.
Can I use the waveform image commercially?
The generated waveform image is yours to use however you wish, subject to any copyright in the underlying audio.
Is my audio file kept private?
Yes. Files are processed securely and deleted within 12 hours. Only the PNG image is returned to you.
